Situated in the very heart of central Europe, the Republic of Hungary is entirely landlocked, being surrounded by countries such as Austria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and the Ukraine.

Much of Hungary's landscape comprises many rolling fields, particularly around the Carpathian Basin, a vast green space split by the Danube River. Other parts of Hungary are extremely hilly and mountainous, such as the easterly Alps, the westerly Transdanubian mountains and the northerly Carpathians.

Hungary enjoys a fairly stable continental climate, with hot, sunny summer months and cool winters, when snowfall is commonplace. Budapest is the capital of Hungary and by far the country's largest city, forming the very heart of the tourism industry. The majority of its sights are clustered around Buda's Castle Hill and along the river banks in the downtown district of Pest.

Budapest is an extremely historic city and dates back almost 2,000 years, when early Roman settlements were first established. Full of traditional Hungarian charm, Budapest is famous for being home to the highest concentration of shopping centres in the whole of Europe. Other notable cities in Hungary include Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged, Pécs, Gyor and Nyiregyháza.

WORLD GUIDES TO HUNGARY

World Guide to Budapest, Hungary
Hungary's proud capital city, Budapest is brimming with a host of stunning architecture and endless culture. Split by the meandering Danube River, Budapest offers plenty of top sights, such as Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament.

World Guide to Debrecen, Hungary
Lying on the very fringes of Hungary's Eastern Plain, Debrecen has grown to become the country's second-largest city, second only to Budapest. Restaurants dominate much of central Debrecen, around the Inner Town and the Piac Utca.

World Guide to Gyor, Hungary
Although Gyor is one of the biggest industrial cities within Hungary, it does contain more than its fair share of tourist attractions. Gyor features a significant concentration of historical buildings, particularly around the Baross Gabor Utca.

World Guide to Szeged, Hungary
Considered to be the most important city on Hungary's Southern Plain in terms of both overall size and status, Szeged is overlooked by many tourists and wrongly so. Szeged boasts many theatres, opera houses and leading concert halls.
